About our school

The importance of Corrimal as a comprehensive community school was evident in the historical memorabilia brought in by the community for the 50th Anniversary.

The school plan states the Corrimal High School community will work cooperatively to provide:

  • a comprehensive education program
  • quality learning through quality teaching and parent and community understanding of and involvement in programs
  • competency in literacy, numeracy, technology and communication
  • a safe and caring environment where self-discipline and respect for others are valued
  • the library-learning centre, extensive vocational education curriculum, inclusive special education program and the farm are features of the school.

Corrimal High School is a coeducational comprehensive secondary school which caters for the full range of student abilities. It is situated in northern Wollongong and it draws students from the Corrimal, Bellambi, Towradgi and Tarrawanna areas.

The school is set in attractive, safe and secure grounds that include a school farm and extensive playing fields. The school has an inclusive learning environment in which students and staff "strives for excellence" and are committed to providing a wide range of educational programs which promote individual development academically and socially. The excellent academic, sporting, artistic, cultural and welfare programs contribute to a student's overall development.

The school incorporates an moderate intellectual disability (IO) and mild intellectual disability (IM) support unit and our students come from a diverse range of backgrounds. We have been successful in developing a supportive and harmonious school culture that provided our students with the opportunity to reach their full potential.

We have committed and experienced staff who work very hard to serve the students and their families. Amongst staff, there is a strong tradition of school evaluation and professional development, leading to innovative programs which address the specific needs of our students.

In recent years an emphasis on supporting literacy and numeracy in the early years of high school has been successful across the range of key learning areas (KLAs). These programs have been facilitated by the inclusion of the school in the priority school's program (PSP).  Funding is used to employ extra staff and to access flexible support for a number of innovative programs.

Corrimal High has strong links with its local community and enjoys the support of an active and effective Parents and Citizens organisation (P&C). There has been a particular emphasis on the development of links with our primary community of schools. These links will be further developed over the next three years to ensure strong development of the community of schools approach.

Many of our students experience a significant degree of under privilege in their lives. Corrimal High School is supported by a range of equity programs that address the socioeconomic disadvantage. This attracts additional funds which enables the school to reduce class sizes, offer a broader range of subject choices, employ additional staff for special programs and provide additional support for our student's academic and social development.

The proactive nature of our school is most evident in its involvement and adoption of the Positive Behaviour for Success program (PBS). This program is a systems approach to preventing and responding to school and classroom problems and issues. Over the next three years it will allow us to develop school wide systems that support learning and promote positive behaviours in all students.

Everything we do as a school is based on a strong belief in, and commitment to, the core values of public education – integrity, responsibility, respect, care, excellence, cooperation, participation, fairness and democracy.
